Think of his name. Holden -"Holdin' " What could he be holding on to?
favorite words? what does he tell us about himself?
Allie: Allie is Holden's little brother. What happened to him? Is he a phony? How could he be perceived as a foil to D.B? The baseball mitt?
Jane represents a person who was a perfect, innocent crush for Holden. She, like Allie, did odd things because of guileless, innocent motives. This is a person who has a special place in Holden's life. And now she is going out with Ward Stradlate!.
!!!Think of her as a concept, more than a person. Much like Greek myths- think of Ares, god of war. Ares was not meant to be a person, but was meant to show how the Greeks felt about the concept of war and people who proposed war. Ares was blood-thirsty and a ravager. Ares had a blood lust, but he also ran away in battle and screamed in pain when hurt. What were the Greeks trying to say about those who loved war? Hades showed no mercy, but Hades was always fair. Isn't that how the society felt about death? Death shows no mercy to anyone, yet Death is always fair. Death will come to the rich and poor alike, the powerful or the weak. Given this way of looking at a character, what does Salinger mean Jane Gallagher to be?
Why doesn't Holden go down to see her when he has the chance?
Why does he never connect with her while he is in New York?
Well, what if she has changed?
What if he discovers that she has been corrupted and is now on her way to becoming a phony?
What would Holden do?
How would Holden feel?
Ackley: next room over; bad skin and bad teeth that "always looked mossy and awful" (19).
Stradlater- roommate; handsome and shallow. Asks Holden to write his composition for him and goes on a date with Jane Gallagher. He and Holden have a fist-fight. He was a friendly guy but "it was partly a phony kind of friendly (26).
Old Spenser: history teacher at Pency Prep. Holden visits him before leaving school. He flunks Holden and reads his essay on "the Egyptians" aloud as an explanation. He smells like Vicks Nose Drops. "Life is a game, boy" (8)
Maurice and
Selma Thurmer- daughter of Pency's headmaster. Sat next to Holden on the bus. Not very pretty. "She was a pretty nice girl, though" (3)
Ossenburger- former student, who made a killing in the funeral business and donated to the school. Talked to Jesus, asking Him to send a few more stiffs (17).
Mrs. Morrow- Ernest Morrow's mother; attractive woman; meets her on a train and spares her feelings concerning her son. He also tells her he has a brain tumor (54).
Carl Luce: Classmate of Holden's at the Whooton School. he meets Holden for Ernie's at drinks. Very mature. Dates a Chinese woman in he late thirties. Knows a lot about perverts (59).
Maurice: Edmont elevator operator / pimp. Sends a girl oup to Holden's room for a good time. After agreening on a price , Maurice wants more. Holden has a fist-fight with him, but doesn't stand a chance (90).
Sunny: the prostitute
Sally Hayes: Holden's old girlfriend. Sally is very interested in the theatre; very affected. They go on a date to see a play and then go skating. Holden asks her to run away with him, and then calls her names. She has a Christmas tree in need of trimming (105).
James Castle: Classmate at Elkton Hills. His name was next to Holden's at roll call. He refused to take back something that he said. Jumped out of a window (?) and died. Holden heard him land and saw him dead (170).
Mr. Antolini: Former English teacher at Elkton Hills. He was the one who finally picked up the body of James Castle. Holden retreats to his house and recieves a long lecture. Plans to stay there until Tuesday, but while Holden is sleeping Mr. Antolini begins to pet him. Flitty. Likes to drink (173).
