Thursday, November 29 work day

Mr. Greven is subbing today; I will be back tomorrow.
Please work on the material that is due tomorrow and Monday. This is individual, not group work. The expectation is that it is a quiet, productive day.  Everyone who manages this gets a 100 points participation grade. Mr. Greven will let me know who I should leave off the list. Thank you for your cooperation.
DUE Friday, November 31: reading and accompanying material for James Fennimore Cooper's excerpt from The Prairie and Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. (handouts on Monday with copies on that day's blog.) As we are discussing this material on Friday, nothing late will be accepted.
Due Monday, December 3: reading and accompanying material for Edgar Allen Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. Again, as this is the focus of the classwork on Monday, no late material will be accepted. Plan your time accordingly.
Test Friday on Bible as literature material.

Due Tuesday, December 4, Nathaniel Hawthorne's  The Minister's Black Veil...  no questions to turn in- just reading- however, you should be prepared to answer the following in class, as in explain to the rest of the class,as per the directions earlier this week.
1. How does the black veil affect Parson Hooper's perception of the world?
2. In what ways does it isolate him from the rest of the world?
3. Why does it make him a more effective minister?
4. What does Parson Hooper mean when he tells Elizabeth that there will come a time when we all cast off our veils?
5 Why does the black veil have such a powerful effect on people?
6. What does it represent?
7.Why do you think Hawthorne chooses not to reveal why Parson Hooper begins wearing the veil?
8. Individual 15 minute quick write: Hawthorne suggests that all people have certain secrets that they choose not to reveal to anyone. Explain why you do or do not agree with this suggestion. (can you avoid I think?)
