Tuesday, November 26, Bible as lit, day 2

Due Friday, November 31: excerpt from James Fennimore Cooper's The Prairie with graphic organizer and Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow with quiz questions. 

Due Monday, December 3: Edgar Allen Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher with accompanying material.  Here is the response list and corresponding number for which you are responsible.

In class today: continuing with Bible literary elements.  Test Friday on this material. This will consist of character identification with possible themes, as well as stories. We will begin by looking at the following pictures and connecting them with a narrative. Please take class notes.

1.      How is the physical appearance of the interior of the House of Usher related to the condition of Usher’s mind?  How is it related to his physical appearance?

3.      Critics have argued that Madeline and Roderick are not only twins but are physical and metal components of the same being.  What evidence is there in the story to support this claim?

9.      If artists (many believe that Roderick Usher represents a typical creative artist) completely turn away from the external world and become drawn into the internal world of their imaginations, they ultimately destroy their capacity to create and may ultimately destroy themselves.
