Friday, September 7

REMINDERS:

Your signed course criteria sheets are due today.
Vocabulary 1 is due at the beginning of class next Friday, September 14
Monday and Tuesday next week is your summer reading assessment.

In class today: We are starting a short Civil Rights unit, the objective being to begin to  think how we construct a social conscience through image and sound.

Before we look at some images, take five minutes to chronologically list five important moments and or people in black American history.

Below is a copy of the handout with which you will be working in class.
Unfortuntely, I am unable to post the power point; however, if you are absent, I can copy it to your thumb drive, so that you will be able to make up the assignment.
1.            Note the date of the image. What has recently occurred? What position did these men serve in the Union army?
2.            What do you see?   What does the title mean?
3.              What is the man wearing?  What is the tone of the image? How is it different from “Tony and his Bride?”   What are the reasons for this?
4.            Look carefully at the woman’s face. How would you describe her?  Put yourself into her thoughts. What might she be thinking?
5.            This is a school for black Americans.  How was it any different other schools?
6.            What type of work are women performing?  How much do you think they are paid? How much education do you think they have had?
7.            What does the title say about the photographer’s message in taking this photograph?
8.            What is the message behind this photo?
